SHE'S A FOUNDER!It's official! Courtney is going to be a founding member of the all new Justice Society of America! This June, JSA #1 comes out so be sure to see Court's team debut! In May's JSA SECRET FILES #1 Ron Marz will be writing an Alan Scott and Star Spangled Kid II story! Courtney will also be teaming up with Young Justice in STARS AND S.T.R.I.P.E. #5 & #6 in August and September! Originally the Young Justice issues were planned to be issues #3 & #4, but now those issues will star the Marvel Family and the introduction of Shiv.
S.T.R.I.P.E. REVEALED!
Through a very intense investigation process, the 'secret' about S.T.R.I.P.E., the previously thought to be robot. In all actuality, S.T.R.I.P.E. will be revealed to be Stripesy in an armored suit! Courtney will still think that her armored step-dad is a robot. The armor will have numerous defenses along with cool features as a built in refridgerator! In other series news, it looks like the planned Seven Soldiers of Victory issue, planned for issue #7 is going to be delayed. Rumor says that the delay is due to the fact that Kevin Smith's Green Arrow series has been pushed back to the year 2000.
GEOFF'S GETTING BUSY!
DC's powers that be have so loved the work on STARS AND S.T.R.I..P.E. thus far, that they've given him the job of 1999's fall crossover, and 2 Titans-related books. The first will be a Changelling mini-series drawn by TITANS fill-in artist Justiniano. The second is under lock and key, but is rumored to feature a female ex-Titan that was a former love interest of Nightwing! Speaking of Titans, former Titan Magenta was shown to still be living in Nebraska in the JLA/TITANS mini-series and is very likely to show up in Court's series!
STAR SPANGLED DEBUT!
Star-Spangled Comics #1 is one of seven one-shots during DC's Justice
Society event in March. The one-shots will be book-ended by All-Star
Comics #1 and #2 by James Robinson, David Goyer, Michael Lark and
Wade Von Grawbadger.
In Star-Spangled Comics #1, Geoff Johns' first full-length comic.
The Sandman and sidekick Sandy join forces with the Star-Spangled
Kid and Stripesy to take on one of Stalker's Seven who makes people
go crazy! When their mentors fall, the lowly sidekicks Stripesy and
Sandy must try to save wartime New York City! The artist of this book
is Chris Weston of The Invisibles.
THE BACKGROUND STORY!
Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. will be series' writer, Geoff Johns' first
pro comicbook work. At DCU:NG he said, "It's going to be a really
fun book. Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer with aliens, robots, and
mad scientists. The book focuses on a rocky daughter/step-father
relationship -- and what happens when that daughter discovers her new
step-father used to be a superhero." That superhero is Stripesy, who
used to be a superhero sidekick to the original Star Spangled Kid.
Pat Dugan, the original Stripesy will play a MAJOR role in the book
as the step-dad of Courtney Whitmore(The Star Spangled Kid). Geoff
and series' artist, Lee Moder will be pushing the envelope with a
few other Golden Age surprises as well! Her step-dad lived in
obscurity ever since the Seven Soldiers of Victory got thrown
forward through time. Now he's on one last mission and his
step-daughter keeps getting in the way!
Geoff said Courtney's development came along because he really wanted
to see a strong female teen in the DCU as well as seeing a
book that centered on high school stuff as much as super-villains.
"She'll be much more contemporary even though her name is the Star
Spangled Kid." Geoff says,"A hip girl with a justified attitude."
Artist Lee Moder's reasons are similar as first quoted at DCU:NG.
"On my end, I got a call from Chuck Kim at DC about a Kid miniseries
and a number for Geoff. Geoff told me of his nasty little plans, I
giggled maniacally, said okey-dokey, count me in, and that was that.
A couple of week's later, Geoff told me that the Kid was being
considered for an ongoing series -- the book was greenlighted in
record time and here we are."
As far as joining any teams, Geoff made his desires clear recently at
the Young Justice Hangout. "I think she could work in Young Justice.
But she'd spend most of her time telling Superboy to shut up! Hey,
we'll have to see how you guys like her. If enough people rally
around her joining YJ she might. Again, I'd like to see her
guest-star a lot but I'd rather her be in JSA along side of Jack
Knight."
Courtney is based in Blue Valley, Nebraska, so Blue
Valley's first superhero, Flash will of course be showing up.
Young Justice, the Female Furies, a few JSA members, and a
Superboy crossover will be in the new Star Spangled
Kid's future as well.
S.T.R.I.P.E. will be a guardian robot that Courtney despises. Dugan
makes it to look after her once she decides to become a super-heroine
and realizes that she's really good at it. However, when it comes to
S.T.R.I.P.E., there's more than meets the eye!
WHAT THE FUTURE HOLDS!
The Star Spangled Kid and S.T.R.I.P.E. will appear in DCU Heroes
Secret Files #1, which comes out December 30th. Her arch-enemy will
appear in February's DCU Villains Secret Files #1. Stars and
S.T.R.I.P.E. should debut in April -- right on the heels
of Golden Age week. There's also a special #0 issue by James Robinson
and Geoff Johns in 1999 as well. It will be a story about the return
of a really cool Golden Age villain and stuff about both of the
Star Spangled Kids and their relationships with Starmen Ted and
Jack Knight.
In issues #3 and #4 Young Justice guest star as they go
undercover in Blue Valley High to investigate the appearance of the
new Star Spangled Kid.
Issue #7 will be a Seven Soldiers of Victory story, which will focus
on solving who the members were once and for all and we'll see a
little of their trip through time and their rescue by the combined
forces of the JLA and JSA as seen in JLA 100-102. Geoff says it's
one of his favorite storylines ever and he's really excited to tell
another side of it.
One of Geoff's favorite Golden Age characters will return around
issue #10 and you can expect to see guest appearances by a slew of
other Golden Age heroes and villains. Geoff and Lee are trying to
make the book very accessible to new readers of the Golden Age as
well as stir up excitement in the older fans too.
